Kidney donor workup and surgery is covered by the recipient’s insurance, so there is not cost to donate. There could be other expenses such as travel, child care, time off work, etc. that will vary depending on your job and location of your transplant center.
Kidney donor workup can take a few months up to about a year, depending on the transplant center and your health.
There is often a visit for one pre-op day about a week prior to surgery (final blood work and anything else needed before surgery).
Kidney Donor surgery lasts 3-4 hours (laparoscopic).
You are often in the hospital 2-3 days before going home.
Recovery at home is about 4-6 weeks before returning to work.
